Goals and Good Reading for the New Year!

Have you noticed that different seasonal transitions are marked by changes in our bodies and minds? Socially and culturally many of us seem to take the New Year and the winter season as a point to stop and reflect, replenish and be more aware of your directions for the New Year. Often, new years resolutions are filled with the intent to improve overall health and fitness.

To this end, I'm going to suggest one book that you may want to pick up at your favorite book store or public library is:

Staying Healthy with the Season by Elson M. Haas, M.D. 21st Century Edition. Celestial Arts, Berkeley, CA., 2003.

Elson Haas, the author is someone I took instruction from at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. He is the founder and director of the Preventive Medical Center in San Rafael, California. He is one of the experts that I turn to in for advisement on doing food based cleanses and detox diets. A detox is something that I suggest those already in good health consider doing at least once a year. It is a great way to tune-up your body and can fit in most naturally with the spring season.

This book provides readers with good advice about how to be in balance with nature and ideas about how to be synchronized with the seasons. What I like about this book is that it blends Eastern healing traditions with those of the West. He relates winter to the Chinese Five Element System, provides suggestions for a winter diet, exercise, as well as herbs. In regards to integrative health and wellness I like Dr. Haas' approaches. The chapter on "Feeling Winter" is suggested reading!

May good health and harmony find you all in 2008!
